» Server-Side Mod - 12/07/2005 - 08:06
Posted by: Deathgripzero
This new server side mod definately looks like a must try. It sounds alittle Unreal Tornament 2004 .. esk.. to me.

Quote:
Domination is a new gameplay mode for Battlefield 2. Its aim is to enhance the Battlefield experience by focusing battles to certain areas and eliminating the repetitive "flag hopping" methods that we see in many games. In traditional conquest mode, players are often forced to capture as many flags as possible to gain a "points advantage" over the opposition. Particularly on large maps, players often spend more time travelling than fighting.

Domination uses a different method by linking up flags to one another to form dynamic frontlines. This increases battlefield immersion, and players are generally always in the action, even on defense.

Ok, finally an update! Got that 6-wheel vehicle all textured. A new APC for the humans was modeled too. It can carry 6 infantry in the back on benches like in the BF2 trucks. Also here in a render, is a sentry turret that you can control and a small infantry bridge. More stuff to come next week soon!

» BF2.org 64man Server Launched! - 10/07/2005 - 21:32
Posted by: silentwarrior

People, we have our Official BF2.org game server up and running!
We are being sponsored by M-E-Tech.com servers. You can view their site here: http://www.M-E-Tech.com.

The Server is a 64 man, unranked server with BF2 VOIP and all the other little extras u would hope to find, no BF2 recorder at the moment, although we may enable it in the future. We decided upon having it hosted on a dedicated box located in Montreal, Canada. This is to provide the best possible ping to both US and UK members (I'm from boston, MA and ping at 40ms). If need be we may also get another server, maybe in West Coast USA.

The server will be run by forum administrators using the latest of the BF2CC admin tool to help it stay up and running.

If any of you are caught messing around on there and not going by the server rules you will be kicked or banned.

So play nice, no flaming or any thing like that, no TKing and just generally don't be a twat and respect the other people on the server or we will have to deal with you

Anyways see you on the battlefield, soldiers!

» Battlefield 2 v1.01 Hot-fix Coming Soon! - 09/07/2005 - 16:48
Posted by: deathgripzero
The Official Battlefield 2 website has recently been updated with some news on the recently released patch.
Quote:
First off, a HUGE thanks to all of you who emailed me in regards to the memory leak found in the update we released earlier this week (v1.01). Your emails found their way to our production team and they’re in the process of evaluating what needs to be done in order to get this fixed. In the meantime, and since the 1.01 update is causing memory leakage on some systems, we recommend that you reinstall the game and NOT the v1.01 update we released earlier this week.

Reinstalling Battlefield 2 will not affect your in-game medals or ranked server statistics. EA and DICE are committed to getting a fix for v1.01 as soon as we possibly can and will continue to keep you informed through this web space in the coming days.

» BF2 Benchmarked. - 13/06/2005 - 11:24
Posted by: Target Practice
With thanks to The Inquirer some BF2 benchmarks have been produced using the recently released BF2 demo. Here is what was said:
Quote:
You can play this game on a low end system, however it will look far better on a more powerful PC. We first tested the game with a GeForce 5700LE graphics card on a 2GHz Pentium 4 system with 1GB of memory. This is close to the minimum required system specifications for Battlefield 2. At low resolutions (1024x768), with most of the DirectX 9 effects turned off, the game ran well. However, with these settings, the graphical glory was sadly diminished.

Looks like if you want nice surroundings then you're going to have to cough up some cash to pay for a new computer to play this graphics hungry game.

» DEMO Update - 10/06/2005 - 12:11
Posted by: Target Practice
Well, the 9th has come and gone with no BF2 DEMO that was planned for release today (10th June). The DEMO may still arrive for download later on today but it looks doubtful after this report from EA's Community Manager, Mike Murphy:
Quote:
This email is to inform you that I will not be sending out the Battlefield 2 multiplayer demo to our file partners upon its initial release. As you’re probably aware, GameSpot will be premiering the demo for a 24-hour period once EA releases it. At this time, we do not have a release date, but one is expected soon. When it is released, you’ll be able to download it from the (no registration is required) and the games official web site located here: www.Battlefield2.com

Yet another dissapointment as EA appears to be delaying their release to the public. We hope that the DEMO will arrive sooner than we expect so keep an eye on the Gamespot downloads page located HERE.

Let's just hope the wait is worth it.

In other news concerning Battlefield 2, IGN have released a great new three and a half minute video showing off yet more BF2 gameplay, with some great music to accompany this. You can download the video HERE.

Quote:
Although Battlefield 2 won't invade stores until June 21, PC gamers will get a chance to test-fire a demo of Electronic Arts' shooter sooner. EA confirmed today that it is planning to release a sample of Digital Illusions CE's forthcoming modern-combat shooter "very soon." In other news we would like to inform the community that rumours of the BF2 Demo releasing today are circulating. However, expect Gamespot to give an exclusive release around 24 hours before the official release of the demo. This demo is said to be availbale to Gamespot subscribers only. For everyone else, expect the demo on the 10th. This news is confirmed via a recent video interview with Scott Evans at E3 where he hints at Gamespot releasing the demo early.

» Official Site Community Update - 03/06/2005 - 17:48
Posted by: Deathgripzero
Today, the Official Battlefield 2 Community website was updated. The new update explains how rankings will work. You also have the option to choose whether or not you play on ranked or non-ranked servers...

Quote:
Now that Battlefield 2 has gone Gold, we felt it would be a good time to share our plans for Ranked server configurations with the community. Also, we thought that some insight into these settings would be useful for prospective Battlefield 2 players (those new to the franchise as well as those who are not so new) in determining which servers will provide the best possible player experience for a given player. Obviously not all players are built the same and while some players will take to the highly competitive Ranked servers like fish to water, we are also certain that many other players will prefer to play in relative safety on Unranked servers.

Although final dates for the Battlefield 2 demo have not been locked down we understand we will be allowed to make it available in little over a week.

Once again these features are not 100% final but the demo will contain:

One map
16-player single player
16 and 32-player multiplayer
Time limit per round
This would place the demo release at around the 10th June. The information can be found HERE.

Thats right, BF2 has GONE GOLD!!

Editorial manager, IGN:
Quote:
The wait is over my fellow Battlefield fans...This just in from the front lines…Battlefield 2 has officially gone gold! The game will begin shipping under the EA GAMES brand starting Tuesday, June 21, 2005.

In Battlefield 2, players will choose to fight for one of three military superpowers: the United States, China, or the newly formed Middle East Coalition. Armed with the latest modern weaponry, players can take control of any of the game’s 30+ vehicles. Players can also hone their skills against improved enemy intelligence in the new single-player campaign before competing online with up to 64 players in some of the most intense battles on the PC.

Enhanced team play features allow players to enter the action on the front lines as part of a formal squad, or work behind the scenes in Commander Mode to direct the strategic assaults of their teammates.
With the new online character ranking and persistence, players increase their rank and unlock awards, including new weapons, medals, and more.

There we have it, BF2 is now officially going to be released!

It has the same kind of voltage we remember of old, with vehicles, bullets, and broken bodies flying everywhere, an orgy of fireballs, a steady stream of smacktalk--and it wakes up that little voice in the back of your head that says, "Just one more round. Just one more enemy. Just one more flag."

Congratulations once again to the developers of 'Battlefield 2', it looks like the game is going to be a sure hit when it is released!

» Singleplayer Interview - 28/05/2005 - 17:08
Posted by: Sevigon
The Battlefield Singleplayer site has conducted an interview with Ben Smith, focusing on the single player side of things including the bots and AI. It's a good read for those not only interested in the online side of things.

Quote:
Will the BF2 Demo include Single Player?
"Yes, we are currently planning to include both multiplayer and singleplayer (Training) versions of one map in the Battlefield Demo release."

How many SP maps will ship with the full version game? Can you comment on which ones?
"The 16-player version of all Battlefield 2 maps except Kubra Dam and Mashtuur City will be available in the singleplayer Training game mode when the game ships. In total, there will be ten different maps to play against the AI on. There are also three different difficulty settings for Training that users can choose from."

» Final WGN Preview - 26/05/2005 - 16:22
Posted by: Target Practice
Well it looks like Wolf Gaming have released their final video recorded at E3 2005. Here is what was said about it:
Quote:
The particle effects are very good in BF2. As are the explosions as you will see. There is also Helicopter footage in here and you can watch me crash my chopper into a bridge.
Once again this is 'shakey-cam' footage showing off some general gameplay in BF2. There is very little action but if you want to check out the environment then this video is for you, otherwise there is nothing too interesting going on so you might want to give it a miss. The video can be downloaded from the following mirrors:

Two seperate updates today:

The first update delivers 14 new screenshots from the Brazilian site UOL showing off a few features that will be present in the game. These screenshots can be viewed HERE.

The second update includes a short interview that Battlefield Central have conducted with DICE. The interview showcases some important questions that needed answering, here is an example of what was asked:
Quote:
Q: Will it be possible to customize the look of one's online soldier? I.E. skin color.

A: No, there are texture constraints which limit this. It was part of the original design...but then technical limitations start creeping in...*sigh*

» Suburban Warfare Preview - 25/05/2005 - 08:33
Posted by: Target Practice
Another preview has been released, this time by Suburban Warfare along with a 21mb video. Here is a little snippet of what they had to say:
Quote:
On the first day of E3’s exhibition, I was playing BF2 and in heaven. The E3 booth was jammed with excited gamers in a short amount of time. The noise was deafening, but the atmosphere was intoxicating. I was getting the chance to play a game I, and thousands of others, had been so looking forward to.
The preview contains some very good information regarding bugs and worries of BF2 that are known to EA and is certainly a very good read. The full preview can be viewed HERE.

As an added treat, a video has been released including never before seen footage demonstrating the destruction of a bridge using some handy C4. Keep in mind that it is a 'shakey-cam' style recording with lots of background noise. You can download the video from the following available mirrors:

Finally,

Some other news from Battlefield 2 than screenshots. You will find Battlefield 2 in the stores from 23 June 2005. The minimum system specs will be a 1.7Ghz P4 running 512MB RAM and 128MB 3D, if you run a Nvidia 5700+ or ATI 8500+ it would be great. The game will only support windows XP, not earlyer versions like Windows Me. All these information has been announced by Elektronic Arts, so these are no rumours!
So, we are still waiting for the demo eh

» Battlefield 2 Demo Rumours - 15/03/2005 - 13:13
Posted by: Skipper
A day ago, planetbattlefield told us that they found out with a program called GameSpy3D that there are EA game servers running the battlefield 2 demo. They concluded out of that, that the demo isn't far away anymore, because EA games in testing it.
Some rumours said after that that the demo will be released the 25th March 2005.

Today, Ben Smith from EA said that there is no word about a Battlefield 2 demo this month. The servers are only for capturing ingame screenshots, trialers and testing other things.
Well, sad... but true.

Their is a rumour flying around that Battlefield 2 demo is now scheduled for released in 85 days. That is around the 10th of April 2005. This rumour is probably unreliable and false but some sources in DICE have indicated that this release date is true. So now we might have a time to wait for. Lets hope the time flys.

Dont take this too seriously as it might be just another let down, but chances are this is the real date.

» EXCLUSIVE: BF2.org Interview with Rock 4 Mod - 24/02/2005 - 18:43
Posted by: silentwarrior
I have conducted an interview with the Rock 4 Mod team and have obtained some exclusive renders as well. Enjoy the interview and the pics!

BF2.org: What's the story with Rock 4?
Rock 4 Team: Rock 4 mod takes place many decades in the future when humans have traveled to Mars and have started colonization. During this, Aliens invade Mars and attempt to conquer it before they head to Earth.

BF2.org: What teams are there? Is Rock 4 only multiplayer?
Rock 4 Team: For the first release, Rock 4 will be limited to multiplayer only. And two teams, humans and aliens. After the first release we may decide to add another team or create a single player campaign. We will also have some unique classes expanding on the regular set.

BF2.org: So how realistic can we expect the mod to be? Will it be completely fantasy sci-fi or strictly scientific?
Rock 4 Team: We're still keeping realism in the mod, but with no restrictions but Mar's climate and geography we can really make some fun stuff and introduce new gameplay concepts. Only things we think will be developed will be put into the human's technology, while the aliens will have more exotic tech. For the most part, it will play alot like being on Earth but with less gravity and completely new technologies.

BF2.org: Mars is quite a boring and desolate place. How do you plan to make maps interesting?
Rock 4 Team: Well, Mars has some really unique landscapes in some places with canyons many times larger than Earth's own. Deserts on Earth aren't very interesting either, which is very similiar to Mar's landscape. There will be various outposts and bases on maps to make them interesting, along with some very extreme terrain in places.

BF2.org: How will teams be balanced? Will they each have an equivilant vehicle? Or will teams each have their own disadvantages?
Rock 4 Team: The humans will be more land based warfare, while aliens will have more powerful air vehicles using their non-conventional propulsion. Weapons will vary between the teams also. Aliens will have energy/plasma weapons and humans will use gauss and railgun varients.

BF2.org: What kind of vehicles can we expect?
Rock 4 Team: We have lots of cool stuff. For just some examples, the humans will have the cool Javelin aircraft (see renders) and a lite battle tank (see renders). We're still working on some alien vehicles, those will show in a future update.

BF2.org: So will the mod take place on just Mars, or will maps also take place on moons or possibly Earth?
Rock 4 Team: Maps will take place on Mars mostly. Although we may decide to have some maps on an alien mothership of sorts. No other planes or moons are planned.

BF2.org: Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. We're looking forward to the mod. Good luck.

Be sure to check out http://rock4mod.com and see what they're working on in their forums!

This week has been a slow week regarding new information about Battlefield 2. So I will give you some information I have recently found out, even though it isn't that important.

First up EA Games has released 4 new action shots of Battlefield 2. Unfortunatly the official BF2 website doesn't have it up yet, but the German EA Games website has it. So here is the link:
Action Shots
Dont worry about the site being in German. After all, you dont have to know the language to view the images.

Next up on my things to tell you, their is an online petition going around that is requesting that EA Games and Digital Illusions release a Software Development Kit for Battlefield 2, so that mod makers can be more "free, creative, innovative, and less bound to the normal source code of BF2". If you want to sign it you can find it here.

Also its been said that the demo will be released late Feburary. So just a few more weeks until we can get our first fix of Battlefield 2.

Thats all for now folks. Keep an eye on bf2.org for more exciting information.

Today we have an amazing update from GameSpot that shows us all of the weaponry that will be found in game. Visit GameSpot for the detailed list. We also get 17 new screenshots. Check the new screenshots out, PAGE 1, PAGE 2.

Each faction will have seven soldier classes that you can choose from, including assault, special ops, medics, engineers, and support troops. The special ops and support classes are entirely new to the Battlefield franchise. Special ops troops are armed with short-range weapons and clad in light armor, but they're able to move quickly and can blow up enemy equipment, or they can designate enemy targets for friendly missiles. Meanwhile, support troops will be able to drop ammo packs for their teammates in addition to providing fire support, courtesy of their machine guns. In this preview, we take a look at the primary weapons that every class for all three factions will carry into battle.

» Special Forces mod - moving to BF2 - 07/01/2005 - 16:23
Posted by: SilentWarrior
We have just recieved information that the Special Forces mod for Desert Combat is going to be moving to BF2 upon its release. Here is what they have to say:

Special Forces is a modification of Desert Combat Final for Battlefield 1942. Its purpose is to focus more on the Special Forces Units of the military and their operations by focusing on small-scale infantry battles and operations.

Special Forces will bring to players experiences that you just don’t get from the normal Desert Combat Mod. New vehicles will be introduced, new weapons, sounds, and even new maps. Maps that will force teamwork and tactical play through objective based goals. You will be able to immerse yourself in well-known Middle Eastern theatres, including cities like Kabul, Fallujah, and even Baghdad. Players will find themselves participating in both fictional and real operations that were once carried out by Special Forces.

All of the members of the Special Forces Mod team have been working hard to bring this Mod to you. We’re all very excited about the upcoming release and anticipate moving the entire mod into Battlefield 2, due for release in March, as we grow in size and popularity.

Feel free to come visit us at our Home Page. You’ll find forums and additional screenshots and even an opportunity to add your suggestions on future releases. For any questions regarding the Special Forces Mod, please contact MormonComputerZ in the Public Relations Department at MormonComputerZ@gmail.com.

One of the many new vehicles that Special Forces will bring to Desert Combat. Special Operations Units often use what are called, High Mobility, Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs) which are basically converted Humvee’s. Look for many different types in Special Forces..

It looks like a very good mod and will be a fine addition to BF2. Check out their site from the link found above.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Gamespot was able to get another preview of BF2. Here's some of it:

We had a chance to play around with some of the secondary abilities of the classes in the game, of which there are seven (which is considerably larger than previous Battlefield games). The support class, for instance, can drop ammo packs around the field to make up for the relative lack of stationary ammo depots in the new game. The medic will now be equipped with a defibrillator that can presumably be used to resuscitate downed allies, though we heard tell that you'll be able to use it to take out hapless enemies with it as well.

Head over to Gamespot to read the rest of the preview.

Posted by: Icenor
We just got word from BF2.se that they have translated the Gamereactor interview with Dice's Lars Gustavson. Gamereactor is swedens biggest gaming magazine. Here's a taste:

You are going to introduce a online gaming community upon the release of BF2, could you explain a little about it?

When you register your copy of BF2 you will at the same time create a personal online-profile. This is the profile you will use to play with in BF2. The online community then logs all your statistics, and there is a lot of statistics, about 42 different types. All from how good you are from shooting with a handle weapon to how good of a medic you are. You will also get medals and other things. When you get better ranking you will be able to unlock totalu new weapons. There is a lot of being high rank in BF2.

Thanks to BF2.se for translating. Here is the rest of the interview.

» Battlefield Australia Interview - 31/12/2004 - 18:31
Posted by: silentwarrior
Our friends over at Battlefield Australia have a very nice interview to share today. They had the opportunity to interview two people who got to play BF2. Aliennation (BF-Maniacs) and Adger (BF-News) were interviewed on their initial reactions to the game and they give us some new insight on how it plays.
Quote:

Battlefield Australia: What were your first reactions when Battlefield 2 loaded up and you started playing?

Aliennation: WOW, the game looks amazing, hard to describe the feeling, but I can say the game is a massive change to all other war games.

Adger: It was already up and running when I got in close contact for the first time. It was a feeling of curiosity, something like "So. What do we have here?" but in the same sense you close in on the most unexpected gift on christmass. I was really excited, thrilled.

BF2.se just send us a mail, informing us that they have a new interview with Dice's Lead Designer, Lars Gustavsson. Theres also a couple of new screenshots.

Bf2.se
There have been rumors about that a demo were to be released around Christmas as a xmas present, anything you would like to say about that?
Lars
There is nothing behind that, as you said, just rumors.

Bf2.se
In some early interviews we could read that the fast ropes was taken away from the helicopters. Is fast ropes something you have planned to be introduced in a update in the future or is it been put in the trashcan?
Lars
You should never say never. But the idea turned out to be much cooler visually then from a game play point of view. But on the right map at the right time it could work. I cant really say what gonna happen in the future but if you wake up one morning with a rope hanging down your window, then you know….

A very good interview, explaining a lot of whats on peoples minds right now. But don't let me keep you.

» New BF2 Preview - 27/12/2004 - 08:27
Posted by: Icenor
A new preview of BF2 has come to our attention. It was originaly writen in german, but the author have now translated it. Theres also several new screenshoots showing the drivers view in some armor vehicles.

In part one of our Hands on Battlefield 2 Preview we covered the relationship of the opposing Infantryunits. We also covered some of the new features Battlefield 2 brings us, like the VOIP-tool and the squad-mode. This part is going to present you more ways of battle on the ground.
Of course Battlefield 2 han to offer by far more then only infantry that we covered in part one. Those of you already familar with our BF2 Gameplayvideo will already have an idea about which role vehicles will take and what diversity we are going to expect. You should take notice though that this movie does not present you all the vehicles included in Battlefield 2, but instead it's only showing those present on the map Zatar Wetlands.

You will find the rest of the preview here.
This was a nice preview and we want to thank the author for translating it to english.

Our good friends over at TotalBF2 have had their own interview with EA Producer Jamil Dawsari

TotalBF2.com: Custom maps have been a huge part of the Battlefield series, however most have gone unnoticed due to the need to download separately and installed. It has been mentioned before that DICE have been looking at the issue of automatic map downloading from the server, seen in games like Call of Duty. Is this feature still included and being worked on or are other ideas to support the custom map scene planned?

Jamil: We did explore this early on, but the bandwidth requirements for BF2 made it a difficult proposition at best. We're still looking into possible solutions for this, but none of them will make it for ship.

This was a feature I really hoped would be in BF2. Let's hope it makes it in a patch.

Another BF2 preview has surfaced. This time its a guys over at GameSpot who has had the honor of testing out the early Alpha version of the game.

And Battlefield 2 will place even more emphasis on infantry operations with a variety of improvements, including the much-needed ability to sprint for limited periods of time (crucial for dodging incoming artillery or getting to the next waypoint when you don't have a vehicle). The game will also have a greater variety of weapons and an integrated stat-tracking system that will be tied in with a persistent online profile you'll keep (though players who really don't want to be held to rankings can turn them off on their servers).

» GameSpy Reports On BF2 - 10/12/2004 - 18:27
Posted by: Icenor
Pick a knee soldier and read the lastest debrief on BF2. This 3 paged article covers the Commander mode and how squades communicate. So what are you waiting for? Move out!

"Charlie team, hold position outside the base," our Commander tells us. Although I know he's a human being, the little voice inside my headphones sounds suspiciously robotic as he efficiently barks out orders to each of our Squad Leaders in turn. "I'm going to soften them up," he announces. Moments later, the airstrike hits: towering explosions erupt all along the hillside.

Read the whole article here at GameSpy. I can't wait to get my trigger happy fingers on this game. And who knows, a demo might be just around the corner

» IGN Plays Battlefield 2 : Commander Feature - 09/12/2004 - 22:07
Posted by: SilentWarrior
Recently the IGN team got to play some BF2 at EA's headquarters. They got to play the "Wetlands" map which is loosely similar to the surrounds of real life, Yemen.
The commander feature in BF2 is supposed to be similar to the one found in the game, "Savage". The commander will be chosen by people playing in game and has some very vital team functions.
Quote:

Satellite Scan: This ability allows the commander to scan the entire battlefield. All enemy units will appear for around five seconds. Only the commander can see the information on his screen and will be responsible for disseminating that intelligence to his players.

UAV Predator: Like the satellite scan, this ability is used for surveillance. A drone (not visible by player characters) will be sent out in a certain area and will reveal all enemy units in that smaller area to both the commander and soldiers on the ground.

Supply Container: Because there are no ammo boxes or medical cabinets around the map anymore, extra supplies will still need to be dropped for squads that manage to successfully avoid death. This ability will allow the commander to drop supplies off to any location on the map via parachute should soldiers need it.

Artillery Strike: The name should say it all. Softening up enemy resistance can sometimes make all the difference in the world when trying to take out an enemy position. Commanders can call upon the big shells of guns in the distance to send a volley of shells towards the selected area. Friendly soldiers will have to clear out quickly if their lives seem valuable.

All I can say is, Wow! The commander feature will make for some very fun battles We will have to wait and see how this will work out in very populated servers.
Another feature of the game that I think is of huge importance is the following:
Quote:
After a match is over, players will have the option to grab a replay file of the game and watch the entire match over again to dissect strategies and just check out the action from different views.

This is going to be an important feature for clans that will utilize this tool to improve their strategies. Kudos go to Dice for incorporating this awsome feature.

» New Mod - 05/12/2004 - 07:13
Posted by: Icenor
It seems we have another mod joing the BF2 arena. Let's all welcome Rock 4.

The Rock 4 Mod has decided to switch engines. We are not moving far, simply to the Battlefield 2 engine. The game is released sometime in the first half of 2005 and it plays much like BF1942 and BFV. We are stopping development of Rock 4 for BFV. We feel that working towards the higher tech BF2 engine and it's capabilities would only make sense.

We are scrapping most of our models and work to create better quality work for the BF2 mod. You can see images of the new stuff below (some of it may be simply older stuff that has been modified).

Also, a new modeler/texture artist has joined us named WrathofAchilles. He'll be makin some models and textures in the future. We are still accepting new staff to work on the mod, of almost any position.

Remember to check out the Rock 4 page.

» GameSpot Preview - BF2's Maps/Levels - 02/12/2004 - 22:24
Posted by: SilentWarrior
Hello, fellow gamers. Today we have an amazing update as it seems GameSpot has posted information on all of the game's maps. There are 11 maps described in the preview and each has some screenshots and pics including the map overlays, whic are pretty neat. There are all sorts of maps that you will be able to play on. These include ones with mines, destroyable bridges, much urban combat and of course, a golf course in one of the maps (hehe). Check out the preview for the full deal! This game is definably going be fun and well worth the wait. It is good to know that the game should ship sometime in the beginning of 2005. Good news!

Quote:

In war, it's important to know your battlefields. A keen understanding of the lay of the land can be a powerful advantage over your opponent. That's why we're pleased to present you with a preview of the maps that will be included in Battlefield 2, the next-generation successor to Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam. Being developed by Battlefield creator Digital Illusions, Battlefield 2 is set in a near-future conflict between China, the United States, and the fictional Middle Eastern Coalition. In the game, you'll be able to battle with up to 63 other players divided into two teams as you attempt to seize control points on the map and eliminate the other team. At your disposal will be the latest in military arms and hardware, including assault rifles, missile launchers, fighters, helicopters, and tanks. Below are details on the 11 maps in the game. Each map comes in three different versions so it can be scaled for 16, 32, or 64 players. Keep in mind that the locales of Battlefield 2 are completely fictional. The game itself will ship in the first part of 2005.

Possibly one of the oldest Battlefield 1942 clans, the Northern Brigade sent us an exciting update that they'd been invited to play some Battlefield 2 with the DICE team. The clan were able get some video footage as well as write up an excellent preview and get a short Q & A. Dont believe it all? Check below for the low-down:
On Thursday 18th November some of us guys in Northern Brigade went to the DICE office for a little BF2 visit. We met the BattleField 2 crew, the EA folks and of course, we got to play the game
The purpose of this little drill was for DICE to get some external feedback on the game. They also wanted us to tell the rest of the community about how BF2 is shaping up. And guess what? There´s not one, but TWO movies recorded ingame as we play. All edited up for you by mr KOiN, so enjoy.

Be sure to check out the article and definately download the 2 videos. The footage shows off some very exciting game play. Many thanks to the guys for sending this in!

» BF2's Scoring System - 25/11/2004 - 01:10
Posted by: SilentWarrior
Hey guys! Found a cool post by EA's Saracen on planetbattlefield's forum. This reveals BF2's point and scoring system. Read on...

Quote:

I thought I would take this opp to clarify how the BF2 scoring system is going to work. In general, we'll be scoring ALOT more than BF1942 or BFV. There is one OVERALL SCORE which combines two categories - TEAMWORK and COMBAT. NOTE: we're still play-testing all of these, so some or more might appear in the final product. But you'll get a general sense of where we're going.

Combat
This one's easy - it's your kills, pure skill-based.

Teamwork
This one is some of the old..and alot of new. Here are a few examples:
1) Control Point Captures
2) Control Point Defend - you kill an opponent within your CP radius you get a +1 in addition to regular kill score.
3) Healing
4) Repairing
5) Resupplying (Support Kit can provide ammo)
6) Driver Score - driver of transport vehicle will get a score boost when passengers either kill an opponent or use their special ability (heal, repair, etc.
7) Kill Assist - if you cause 50% damage or more to an opponent and someone else finishes them off, you get half the kill score.

As you can see, there are alot more ways to score in BF2...and alot of it encourages teamwork.

cheers,

jamil aka [EA] Saracen

That's good to hear. Can't wait to try it out

» Battlefield 2 Interview with Lars Gustavsson - 14/11/2004 - 11:58
Posted by: SilentWarrior
Here's an interview with Lead Designer Lars Gustavsson. and Battlefield2.us This is a very nice and revealing interview. This slightly old interview is now here for your enjoyment.

Quote:
Battlefield2.us:
One of the released screenshots shows a Saw trooper firing from a seated position out of one of the doors of a Black hawk. Will it be possible to fire from any other vehicles in this way? For example I always felt it strange a Jeep passenger in BF1942 had to just sit there and not use their weapon.

Lars Gustavsson:
We felt, as you did, that people didn't ride in vehicles together often enough and part of that was the fact that you couldn't help out in the combat from the passenger seats.
That's why we now allow all passengers to participate in the battle regardless of where you are seated.
If you’re in the passenger cabin of a BTR-90 you will be able to fire through firing ports, if you’re in a HMMWV you can even sit in the rear tossing out mines to take out the enemies that are chasing you.

Battlefield2.us: Are there any plans to allow machine gun turrets on tanks to swivel independently from the tank turret to prevent the impossible difficulty of trying to aim the machine gun while the driver is checking for targets?

Also while on the subject of tanks are there any plans to provide them with smoke launchers to help obscure them during combat?

Lars Gustavsson: I'm happy to hear that you bring up so much that we already have addressed in Battlefield 2 based on community feedback. Yes, we have changed the turrets so that there should be no more irritating moments when you have the enemy in sight and suddenly the driver turn the tank and you miss.
Regarding the covering smoke, we are looking into it and we'll see if it makes it into the final game.

» Interview with Sean Decker - 06/11/2004 - 09:59
Posted by: Rico
The guys over at the Private Eye Forums have conducted an interview with Sean Decker, the Executive Producer of Battlefield 2.

Quote:
With the new Commander mode, what will make the other soldiers follow the commands? If they choose to disobey an order, will they be punished in some way? If not, what makes the Commander different to say, just sending messages to your team?

The commander mode will allow players to provide both information and support to their team-mates. In conjunction with squads, you’ve got a powerful feature for communicating with your team and affecting the action on the map. The commander can do the following: provide intel on enemy positions, drop supplies for the team, provide indirect fire-support and facilitate communication between squads. In addition – the commander score is linked to the performance of his team – giving the CO major incentive for the team to succeed. The incentive for the team to follow the orders is that the commander will most likely be willing to lend artillery and supply aid to those who listen. However, if the team feels that the commander is not the best candidate, they can chose to boot him from his position with a team-vote.

The interview covers aspects on mod support and teamwork amongst other things. Be sure to check it out by going here.

» New BF2 Interview: Concerning Modding - 01/11/2004 - 22:50
Posted by: silentwarrior
We have another great piece of BF2 news. Today it is in the form of another great interview. HomeledFed interviewed Battlefield 2's new community mod director, Lawrence Brown.

Quote:
HomeLAN - With Battlefield 2 coming up, what plans does EA have in supporting mods for that game?

Lawrence Brown - That’s a big question. We have some amazing things planned, things you’ve never seen any game publisher do before. Unfortunately, I’m not at liberty to say anything more specific at the moment other than I’ll give you the following example: For BF2, among other things, DICE is creating the mod tools at the same time as they are making the game. This means modders won’t have to reverse-engineer the game like we had to with bf42. Everything will be there and working from the beginning. Let’s just say that as a modder myself, I’m very excited about what’s going to happen with BF2.

» BF2 Q&A on GameSpot - 30/10/2004 - 05:03
Posted by: Rico
GameSpot have posted an interesting Q&A talking with Digital Illusions producer Sean Decker about the upcoming game, Battlefield 2. The questions range from the setting, lessons learned from the previous Battlefield game, the new character classes, map size, graphics and the Battlefield TV feature:
Players will, of course, be able to play with modern weapons and vehicles, such as wire-guided antitank missiles, laser-guided bombs, and the joint strike fighter. They will also be able to play the game with squads and commanders. These give them some unique tools to help them play together more effectively. These tools include being able to track their teammates, use the built-in voice-over-IP real-time chat to talk to their squads, and even spawn in on their squad leaders' locations when they die. Another great feature is that the game will have built-in tracking of statistics and rankings of all the players worldwide who play on ranked servers. This allows you to build up a history with your player, unlock new weapons, and earn various rewards.

Be sure to check out the whole article by going here! It also mentions that the video released a few days ago actually contains footage of a build almost 2 months old. So, if you thought it looked good, then imagine what it looks like now!

» BF2 October Newsletter - 27/10/2004 - 19:25
Posted by: Rico
The October newsletter packed with information on Battlefield 2 has just been released, and can be found in your e-mail inbox's if you have subscribed. If not, fear not as all the info can be found right here!

Firstly, there is an interview with Battlefield 2 Executive Producer Scott Evans, which can be found by going here. Here is just a slice of the interview:
It's been mentioned that a player can select different looks for his character, as well as weapons. What does this mean exactly? Will we have a kit system like Battlefield Vietnam, but expanded? Or will a player class be able to fully outfit himself from a list of weapons and clothes (like, choosing from 5 pistols, 6 machine guns, etc, a real list of items)?

Scott Evans: Players will go up in rank from Private through the various military officer ranks. As players do so they will unlock new weapons and equipment which they can outfit their soldier with. Better players will naturally progress more quickly. However, we are changing the scoring system to reward those previously thankless people who role played within their kit. Rewarding engineers who repair vehicles and medics who heal teammates fosters a greater sense of teamwork.

To go along with this there are 12 new screenshots showing off pretty much the same thing which has seen before in the last unofficial video. You can see them all by clicking here.

Last but not least, EA have released their own video which the screenshots were taken from, which contains a short amount of unseen footage.

Right click and Save As:

    » Calling all BF2 Mod Team Leaders - 23/10/2004 - 12:58
    Posted by: Rico
There has been a new community update posted over at the Battlefield: Vietnam website with information important for any budding BF2 mod teams. Here is the scoop:
Calling all BF2 Mod Team Leaders
Over the last couple of months, EA and DICE have seen several mod teams declare their intent to develop content for the Battlefield 2 engine. Some of these teams come from successful Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam teams and others are starting fresh. Well, whether your team is on .45 of its Battlefield 1942 mod, or have never touched the current Mod Development Toolkit, EA and DICE want to get to know your team and your big plans for BF2.

By providing this information, you will help us understand your strengths (and where we might be able to provide support) and also help us promote your mods down the road as they near release. As you've seen, we love to talk about successful Mod Teams in this space, and we will be doing even more of this for Battlefield 2.

Here's what we would like to know. Please provide as much detail as you feel is necessary. Note: Even if you have been in contact with someone at EA or DICE previously (or talk with one of us every day), we would appreciate it if you provided this information to us, anyway.

    • Mod Name Mod Concept (i.e. is it Battlefield in Korea, or is it something like giant robots duking it out on other worlds)
    • Big Idea (what will be your killer feature? This may be the same as your concept)
    • Mod Team Lead and Members (please provide the following information for each member of your team, with as much detail as you see fit)
    • Nickname
    • Real-world Location (US and Canada: city, state/province; Europe and Asia: city, country)
    • Specialties (scripter, mapper, skinner, etc)
    • Previous mod experience (preferably with a few specific examples of content created -- i.e. maps mapped, models modelled, skins created, objects scripted, etc.)
    • Link to Mod Home Page
    • Mod Team E-mail Address

Please send this info to bfhq@ea.com with subject line "Battlefield 2 Mod Team - (your mod's name here)

Thanks to all who agree to share this information with us. We look forward to learning about your team and speaking with each of you on a one-on-one basis.

EAComMike and the rest of the Battlefield team!

If your part of a mod team be sure to get in touch with them as it will be very worth while. Its great to see EA and DICE taking such an eager stance in the modding community already, so be sure to take full advantage of this opportunity!

The final release date of the Demo Version is still unknown. » New Mod - Battlefield: Apocalypse - 05/10/2004 - 06:05
    Posted by: Rico
A new mod for Battlefield 2 titled "Battlefield: Apocalypse", has emerged. Originally started for Battlefield: Vietnam the team are now focusing their efforts on the yet to be released Battlefield 2 engine.

Here is what the team had to say:
BF:A is a BF2 Full Conversion currently under development using the BFV Refractor II engine. It is set around the year 2056, approx. 50 years after the demise of civilization by nuclear holocaust. Everyone now fights for food, water, gas, and survival.

We now have 16 members on the mod team and have approx. 80+ models created and 20 of those are skinned and in-game. Not many pictures to show yet, but screenshots of some of the models may be coming soon.

We are still in the early stages of development, so we are extremely busy and haven't had much time for community updates. But as time goes on, we will do more promotional stuff. Up until now, we have tried to stay under the radar.

You can visit their website by going here. You can also find the modification listed on our modifications page along with all the other known mods for Battlefield 2 in production.

    » Swedish Defense licenses DICE's technology - 30/09/2004 - 16:42
    Posted by: rico
DICE have announced that the Swedish Defence have bought license to the technology that will be powering Battlefield 2. The technology will be used to power simulators used in the Swedish defense training programs.

The agreement includes a development license worth SEK 4m. The license also includes a minor license support function.

AerotechTelub chose the Battlefield 2 technology because it enables simulation of large geographical areas. It also gives the player the possibility to co-practice different roles in the Swedish defense, and the ability to train for international efforts. The Battlefield 2 engine can also be applied to support the development of new management methods within the military.

The Battlefield 2 game is being developed at the Digital Illusions office in Stockholm and will be launched in spring 2005.

    » Homelanfed.com Interview with DICE - 22/09/2004 - 15:48
    Posted by: Blake
Homelan have posted an exclusive interview with the Dice team. The founder of Trauma Studios, Frank DeLise discusses Dices' recent aquisition of Trauma and the progress of Battlefield 2.

    Quote:
HomeLAN - When you first conceived of the Desert Combat mod, did you have any idea that it would grow to a full fledged developer and then being directly associated with DICE?

Frank DeLise - It was a thought that I always had in the back of my mind, but it is not what drove me. My passion was for the mod itself and the fun it produced. It is obviously great that it turned out this way, since now as a team we can bring new ideas to gamers everywhere.

    » Battlefield 2 Interview with Lars Gustavsson - 22/09/2004 - 15:41
    Posted by: Blake
EA games have a new interview with the lead designer of BF2, Lars Gustavsson.

    Quote:
Battlefield 2 will ship during the spring of 2005, so while the whole team is working hard to get all the features and content in, things are coming together to shape the game that we set out make. I think that right now when we are testing, it’s all the new high-tech weapons that thrill me the most. But if I step back and look at it on a larger scale, it’s the improved teamplay with Squad and Commander that gives the gameplay a totally different feel. There’s nothing like having a good Squad that you lead into battle.

Welcome to the new site. We finally managed to get everything working the way it should before we re-launched after the problems we had a few weeks ago.

At the moment you will still have to login twice to access the site and the forums. This will hopefully change soon, once we figure out the technical details
